Last night was the 2016 Met Gala. It was pretty much uneventful there were not many wow moments on the red carpet. Everyone seemed to have gone with the same color scheme. The theme of the gala this year was Manus X Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology, which is the theme of next year’s costume institute exhibition. It explores the differentiation between handmade haute couture (embroidery, feather work, and lace) and machine made fashion (like 3-d printing and mass production). This raises the question of do you have to wear silver, gold, and different color metallics in order to follow or be on point with the theme of technology. Technology does not equal silvers and metallics. Guests could incorporate the theme of technology by using newer designers or new innovations in the world of fashion. Some guests did most did not. Here are some of the looks from this year’s Gala and my opinion on some of the best and worst looks!
Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Kylie Jenner, and Kris Jenner all in Balmain. They all have on metallics and crystals this does not equal technology. The ladies look like they all have on the same dress just in different colors. Kanye does not even look like he’s dressed for a gala.
Zoe Saldana in Dolce & Gabbana. This captures the “Manus” side of the theme.
Rita Ora in Vera Wang. Love this look. Another feathered train. I would have worn more jewelry either an upper arm cuff or a diamond tennis bracelet.
Zendaya in Michael Kors Collection. Love the dress but it had nothing to do with the theme. I do not like the hair. She should have done an up do.
Misty Copeland in Jason Wu. She played it safe. There was nothing spectacular but she still looked good. She could use some more jewelry.
Kendall Jenner in Atelier Versace. She captured the theme by wearing a dress with laser cut outs. Her makeup and hair are perfect! She just needed some more accessories like bracelets and a statement clutch.
BEST MAKEUP & HAIR: ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY!
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in She looks like a statue! Her makeup and hair are flawless. The whole look is flawless the only problem is that I do not see how it relates to the theme but it still is a perfect look.
MY WORST DRESSED (WOMAN):MADONNA!
Madonna is wearing Givenchy. This looks like star wars meets stripper. It looks too much like a costume. I love the boots!
MY WORST DRESSED (MAN): HAMISH BOWLES!
Hamish Bowles in Gucci. I do not know what is going on here. The floral print does not work for him I do not know if it would work for anyone. He looks like a older lady’s sheet set. I do not know who Gucci was expecting to wear this when they decided to design this suit.
MY BEST DRESSED: CLAIRE DANES!
Claire Danes in Zac Posen. Zac Posen’s Glow -in-the-Dark, Fiber Optic-Woven strapless gown captures the theme PERFECTLY! Zac posen took an older look and upgraded it by adding lights (TECHNOLOGY)! The hair and makeup were perfect. Danes covered all bases of the theme and made it look good hence why she is my best dressed.
